Legislative Committee Dismisses Misconduct Allegations against GP GOP Lawmaker
News Image
A legislative committee has dismissed allegations of misconduct against a Grants Pass Republican who read a sexually explicit book passage on the House floor. In a split vote, the House Committee on Conduct last week decided District 3 State Representative Dwayne Yunker did not violate legislative rules or create a hostile work environment when he read a passage from young adult novel "The Haters" on the House floor in March. The Oregonian reports Yunker -- who routinely uses the three minutes allotted to each lawmaker each floor session to make comments to rail against Democrats and LGBTQ+ issues -- read the passage to protest the book's accessibility to high schoolers in his district. The Oregon Legislative Equity Office received at least two complaints from legislative staff members alleging Yunker made sexually explicit remarks on the House floor that day. The identities of the staff members were not disclosed during the meeting or in a report investigating the instance. One of the staff members subsequently accused Yunker of retaliation when Yunker publicly disclosed the letter that the Oregon Legislative Equity Office had delivered to his office informing him of the allegations against him. Yunker was not present at the meeting, but shortly after the meeting concluded, he celebrated the committee's decision on social media

GP Friends of Library to Stage Rally Outside Board of Commissioners' Meeting
News Image
Grants Pass Friends of the Library will hold a rally outside the Anne G. Basker Auditorium on Thursday at 10 a.m.. The "No Shushing" rally will be held outside while the Josephine County Board of Commissioners meets inside for its weekly business session. Rally organizers say the event is a response to Board Chair Andreas Blech's abrupt adjournment of the August 14th meeting in which he cited audience "disrespect" in applauding a long-awaited vote on the lease for the Grants Pass branch library. Out of concern that Commissioner Blech will take any murmur of either critique or appreciation as a chance to once again shut down the meeting, Grants Pass Friends of the Library encourages supporters to attend the "No Shushing" rally outside. A continuation of the public hearing on the library lease is on the agenda. Jennifer Roberts, co-chair of Grants Pass Friends of the Library, said "it appears Commissioner Blech will take any excuse to shut down a meeting to avoid a vote on the lease and we refused to give him one." She said they would rather be loud outside the meeting than "shushed" inside the meeting.
