Lithia Springs Runaways Arrested
Authorities arrested two runaways from Lithia Springs Boys home this morning. The two youths were taken into custody after they allegedly stole a gun, some hunting knives and a truck.
Prisoners in Hot Water
County prisoners are in hot water again. Monday the 10 year old hot water heater in the Josephine County Jail failed.
GP Gets a Quarter Inch of Snow-Crater Lake Gets a Foot
Grants Pass officially measured a quarter inch of snow Tuesday night and Crater Lake received a foot of snow. Even with that foot, the Lake is still lagging behind normal levels.
Evening County Commissioners Meeting
The Josephine County Board of Commissioners is looking at moving their one Wednesday Business Session held in the evening from the third Wednesday each month to the second of the month this fall.
Commissioners to consider enterprise zone consolidation
The Josephine County Commissioners heard a presentation from Southern Oregon Regional Economic Development, Incorporated (or SOREDI) regarding its application for continuation of the Grants Pass enterprise zone and consolation of the two enterprise zones in the county.
The Commissioners have a seven-day waiting period to decide on the move.
Fire that burns vacant White City home started in garage; no cause determined yet
A fire that destroyed a vacant two-story home in White City Saturday night started in a garage on the west side of the house.
Investigators haven’t determined a cause yet.
The house had been abandoned and had been an apparent haven for transients. It was engulfed by flames when firefighters arrived six minutes after the blaze was called in.
Two run away from Lithia Springs boys home
Two boys ran away from the Lithia Springs Boys Home in Ashland yesterday, bringing the total number of runaways to 12 this year.
The two left just after midnight yesterday.
Because of this latest instance, the Oregon Youth Authority said it won’t send any more boys to the 13-bed home until they confer with Community Works, which runs the home.
Wolf Creek man sentenced 22 years for work in marijuana operation
A Wolf Creek man has been sentenced for 22 years in federal prison for his responsibility in a large-scale marijuana operation manned by armed illegal immigrants he recruited from California.
54-year-old Henry Xavier Villa was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Medford on Monday for growing some 8.918 marijuana plants on his 160-acre property in Wolf Creek. The property has been seized by the government in a forfeiture action.
Unemployment figures rise in January
Josephine County’s unemployment figures rose 1.4 percentage points in the one-month period from December to January, from 13.8 percent to 15.2. January’s decline was mostly due to typical seasonal reductions in retain trade
The Oregon Employment Department says the county had 14.7 percent unemployment in January 2000.
The state’s unemployment figure also rose in the last month, from 10.7 to 11.8 percent.
Through 2009, the largest losses occurred in manufacturing, construction, and business and professional services.
27-percent turnout yields five new councilors
A special election in which only 27.6 percent of city voters turned in ballots revealed five new members of the Grants Pass City Council tonight.
Winning in tonight's special election were Dan DeYoung, Rick Riker, Lily Morgan, Darin Fowler and Kris Woodburn.
